Discussing the Significance of the Greek Language on the World of Christ

The Greek culture was not popular until the days of Alexander the Great. He conquered many nations and cities, with a thought that the people of Greece will take advantage and introduce their culture to the nation or cities.  These transfers of culture were common in the ancient days, when an empire overcome a nation or another empire, they impose their language and their way of living on the people.

The Greek language became worldwide and influential as the English language is today. There was not any doubt how powerful the Greek people were, they build schools, gymnasiums, and other things that will entreat the people to fall in love or study their culture and language. In the aspect of religion in the ancient days, many writers use to write in Greek. When Alexander the Great conquered empires and nation, they also tried to convert all the Jews to Greek which was know as Hellenism.

According to Josephus who is a well-educated Jew and a priest, Greek, although well-known as a secondary language, was not the primary or most-understood language of Jesus’s time. That means that during the time of Jesus the Greek language was common, but it wasn’t dominating and popularly spoken. Whiles the Jews feared the spread of Greek language, they could not stop it because it was still spoken in the diaspora by the Jewish who were returning to Jerusalem.

Jesus was much learned. He had the knowledge about the Greek language but that was not the original language he mostly spoke. Jesus spoke Aramaic and Greek when communicating with the Romans. Stainley Porta said,

“More impressive than what is known even of Galilee for establishing the probability that Jesus spoke Greek is the epigraphic and literary evidence for the widespread knowledge of Greek throughout Palestine including Galilee That Greek was used not only in the Diaspora but also in Palestine, even for composition by Jews of distinctly Jewish literature including much religious literature, indicates that Greek was an important and widely used language by a sizable portion of the Palestinian Jewish population.”

He made this comment according to Mathew 15:26-27 which was the communication between Syrophoenician woman and Jesus.

Though the Greek language is no longer relevant but the impact of everything that the Greece people did is relevant till now. There are many documents that were translated to Greek like the Jewish Tanakh was translated and they called it Septuagint, and the Christian New Testament was also written in Greek.
